As a former professor who was always an institutional heretic and trouble maker, I was always far more interested in intellectual engagement over conventional academic work. They are not the same thing. The sterile accumulation of inert information - the professor as the passive docent of the objective fact - the transfer of this mountain of academic sludge to the institutional inmates through tactics that require feats of faithful memorization -this never suited my temperament or purpose.

...Conformity as a human trait is rarely self discovered, only those who refuse to conform are aware that it exists. A cultural renegade requires not only courage, that comes later, but first the supreme critical consciousness to surface the embedded notions that govern those around her, and then summon the courage to overthrow them in public.
